Fair Trade

Fair trade works on a number of simple principles:

bullet

Producers should be paid a living wage which covers the costs of production and provides them with a basic income to enable them to support their families.

bulletProducers should enjoy healthy working conditions and fair conditions of employment
bulletAdditionally there should be a social premium to enable the producers to invest in their local communities
bulletBuyers should commit themselves to long term policies of buying from producers to enable them to make long term plans for their families and communities.

The Coach House is an associate member of the British Association of Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) and buys many of its goods from suppliers on the BAFTS lists, including Traidcraft, Shared Earth, People Tree and many others.

It also imports jams, pickles, chutneys, sauces and marmalades from the Swazi Kitchen in Manzini, Swaziland. This is a project which employs 30 women, buys its ingredients from local farmers and supports 6 orphanages in the local community. Sadly, Swaziland has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection in Africa and of a population of less that 1 million, over 80 000 are orphans.
